BMW field project in the Master of Business Intelligence and Data Science
Efficiency gains with AI software: ISM master students tinker with software solutions in a field project for BMW
As part of a BMW field project, ISM students in the Master of Business Intelligence & Data Science at the Munich campus were particularly high in demand: under the guidance of Professor Andreas Widenhorn, five student groups were able to explore innovative ways to increase the efficiency of software development with generative AI at the world's leading automotive manufacturer and provider of premium financial and mobility services.
The project included visits by BMW representatives to the ISM campus Munich and an exclusive tour of the BMW production facility. Finally, the excitement grew as the students were asked to present their results to senior executives at the BMW headquarters.
BMW was impressed with the results. Key takeaways from the project presentations included a better understanding of tools like ChatGPT and Gemini and how they work for different tasks with different settings. BMW plans to continue this partnership. ISM Professor Widenhorn highly values such projects to emphasize the synergy between academic and industrial innovation.
As for the students, the project showcased an extraordinary collaboration with BMW. It was a special experience for instance for Alvaro Ibarra Martin del Campo: "We experimented practically with generative AI and greatly expanded our technical skills in the process. It was both challenging and exciting."
Fellow student Sebastian Meier adds: "It was a very enriching approach. It did not only give us the opportunity to apply the technical skills we had learned in the classroom to a real-life project. It also enabled us to gain valuable insights into BMW as a leading automotive company - an inspiration, also with a view to the future of AI in the automotive industry."
