Learning with eight nations: Alicia's semester in Porto
On the banks of the Douro River lies the colorful and vibrant Porto – Portugal's second largest city. This is where Cologne ISM student Alicia Gómez Velázquez spent her semester abroad. An absolute highlight for her was the international atmosphere in the courses: "My marketing course at IPAM Porto consisted of a total of eight different countries: Egypt, Brazil, Germany, Hungary, Italy, India, Portugal and Tunisia. This gave me the opportunity to get to know other cultures much more closely – the languages, the rituals of welcome, attitudes, behaviors and much more. This great experience has given me friends and acquaintances all over the world."
Portuguese culture was inspiring for the Luxury, Fashion & Sales Management student as well: "I was fascinated by the calm, serene and patient nature of the Portuguese. I think that we Germans can learn a thing or two from the basic Portuguese attitude." The small courses and individual support enabled Alicia to develop further during her studies. "I particularly appreciated the feedback culture. After every performance, such as a presentation or an essay, a factual and appreciative feedback was given."
Alicia's tip for those who are also drawn to Porto: "The Ponte da Arrábida Bridge. In 1963, the arch was the largest in the world at 65 metres. Since 2016, the bridge has been open to visitors and offers spectacular views of the city and the Douro River."
